#12 - Start a Sawmill
This idea is going to take some money, and allot of time! But the old saying goes, "It takes money to make money."
I was searching for wood to build my guitar that I'm making, and found that hardwoods are really..expensive! Lets say I wanted a 17x17 inch piece of maple, which is a common tree. They want me to pay $100, plus $30 shipping for a piece of maple! Crazy! So, my idea really would be a good way to make some bucks, if you know where to look for the trees to cut.
How to do it:
- Start a Sawmill - Your going to need a chainsaw, a huge table saw, a huge planner, a huge jointer, and allot of other tools that I can't think of off the top of my head. Its going to cost you money, but if you already have some of these then your in luck!
- Search - If you are surrounded by trees that belong to you, then good for you! If not, then search Craigslist with a 50 miles radius (it will be worth the drive)and find posts where people want trees removed for free. You can also look in the local papers and such.
- Do you homework - Make sure that the trees they want cut down are worth it. Check the internet for similar wood types and see how much they are selling for!
- Cut it Down - Go take a drive in your big truck, safety gear, and hopefully some helpers, and cut trees down!
- Mill Time - Once you get the wood home, its time to start cutting it, and planning it, and joining it. Make sure to cut various sizes, or just make big sheets that you can cut down later. Always keep the width the same as some people need wider boards and rather not glue them together to make a board wider. The wider the board, the more money you can charge!
- Sell It - Might as well sell it on Ebay like everyone else! Start your own Ebay Store and take lots of pictures and list the wood you have to sell.
If you have the right tools for the job, and own a good bit of property, then this may be for you! There is money in selling hardwoods, that's a fact! If anyone tries this, or is doing this for a living I would like to hear some feedback..and maybe give me some prices so I can finish my guitar?
